DoEvents - September 2009

DoEvents is one of several emails that VBUG provides free of charge to the developer community. To see a complete list and subscribe please visit www.vbug.co.uk/newsletters

Welcome to the September issue of DoEvents. During the past few months, we've been working hard on organising the VBUG conference 2009 and are proud to announce that it will take place on 26th November. We'll be putting together some great content and will keep you posted as things develop.

Following the recent VBUG elections, I'm delighted to have been awarded the role of VBUG Chairman. Having worked with Chairman Andy Westgarth for the past 2 years in my capacity as Vice Chairman, it's a privilege for me to continue serving the group in a high level capacity. During Andy's term as Chairman, he contributed greatly to the group and has done a fantastic job. He will continue in his role as VBUG North East Coordinator and can now devote more time towards building up the active community in his region. This month, his meeting in Newcastle features a line up of 3 presentations which I would highly recommend to those in the area.

The second phase of the VBUG elections will be focused on the role of Vice Chairman. Robert Blackmore and Sam Morrison (current VBUG London Coordinator) are standing for this role and I would encourage VBUG members to place their votes by emailing Nicky Gordon at Nicky@vbug.com.

During the month of September, we have further events organised in London, Bristol and Bracknell. These cover the topics of NHibernate, Windows Presentation Foundation and SQL Server respectively. Remember to keep an eye on the VBUG website for further upcoming events.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the summer and hope to see you at an event soon!

An Introduction to Windows Presentation Foundation by David Ringsell
Date: Wednesday 16 September 2009
Topic: An Introduction to Windows Presentation Foundation
Overview: Windows Presentation Foundation provides a radically different approach to creating User Interfaces. By employing XAML to design the UI, a much rich user experience can be provided. Sound and video can easily be included. Using XAML as hierarchical and declarative mark-up language allows the creation of much more versatile & exciting screens. This is a big leap forward from the previous way of working with Windows Forms.
This talk will employ accelerated learning methods to improve participants understanding and recall. We will use mind-maps and communications exercises to make the talk more fun.
I have worked for many years as a Microsoft technical trainer. I am currently getting requests to deliver training in WPF. I use accelerated learning on a daily basis, as I learn and train new stuff.

Grey Matter chosen to pilot Microsoft ISV Licensing Scheme

Grey Matter is proud to announce that it’s been chosen as the sole distributor to pilot Microsoft’s Indirect Channel ISV Royalty Licensing Scheme in the UK and Ireland. The scheme allows qualifying ISVs to include Microsoft licensed products in their software packages. This new indirect channel doesn’t involve minimum quantities and the Microsoft Authorized Distributor does most of the administration, which is where Grey Matter comes in. Microsoft’s Simon Aldous commented, “Grey Matter has a proven track record in supplying product and advice to the Software Developer Community and we believe that this will provide a solid foundation upon which we can build an efficient and effective route for ISV’s to engage with Microsoft from a Royalty licensing perspective.“ For details visit http://www.greymatter.com/mcm/Microsoft-ISV-Licensing
