Welcome to the June issue of DoEvents,
the UK Developer Community has seen a plethora of great events over the
last two months with various Developer Days in Belfast, Glasgow and Taunton
and WebDD in Reading. The list of events continues this month too with two
great VBUG Meetings in Newcastle and Bracknell, covering SharePoint
Development Testing and Agile Methods. Don't miss out register today!!
The new VBUG admin team is now in place
and hopefully things are running smoothly. We have regional events running
throughout the country but are always looking for enthusiastic people to
start up new groups. So, if you would like to start up a VBUG group in your
area, please contact me.
I am also starting to look for speakers
for the VBUG National Conference in November. If you have something you
would like to present just send me your ideas for consideration.
Finally, we have some special offers
this month too from VBUG partner Grey Matter – see below for details.
All the best

Newcastle: Testing SharePoint with Typemock Isolator
Date: Wednesday 17
June 2009
Topic:
Overview:
---- PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE TO 17th June 2009 ------------
The development and testing of SharePoint applications is problematic. You
usually need to put a large infrastructure in place to allow even the
simplest operations to be performed usually meaning you need Windows server
on your development PC or you need to use VPCs.
In this session I will show how you can use Typemock Isolator to improve
your software quality by creating a robust testable environment for that is
not dependant SharePoint being installed on either the development PC or
any automated build servers.

VBUG London: This One Goes Up To 11, or How To Write Scalable ASP.NET
Overview:
Phil Pursglove will discuss his hot tips for writing scalable Web
applications.
So you've written the new MySpace and it's getting lots of use - but the
more users you get, the s-l-o-w-e-r the whole thing runs.
In this session we'll discuss strategies, hints and tips that you can use
to write ASP.NET that scales effectively as your user base grows.
This will include:
- how to cache HTML output so your page doesn't have to render every time.
- how to cache data so you don't have to get it from the database every
time.
- how to reduce your Viewstate to a few bytes in just three lines of code.
- how to shrink your JavaScript so it gets to the client faster.
- why letting the GridView do its' own paging is a bad idea.
- an introduction to Project Velocity, Microsoft's new caching engine.
Phil Pursglove is a Senior Software Developer with WSP Group in Cambridge.
He has worked with the .Net Framework since its' inception and was one of the
first developers to gain the MCSD qualification for .Net. Phil has been
involved with the UK Microsoft community for over five years and has
presented at user groups and conferences. Away from the keyboard his
interests are his XBox 360, cooking, and fencing.

Bracknell: with Seb Lambla
Date: Tuesday 23
June 2009
Topic:
Overview:
Join us in Bracknell where Sebastien Lambla will talk about 'When agile
goes bad - how to stay calm and move forward'.
Here's an outline of the session from Sebastien:
With applying agile methodologies comes changes in many aspects of
delivering software. And with any change will come a time when something
fails. How to keep everyone calm? How to provide practical solutions to
prevent people from reverting back to non-agile practices at the first
roadblock? Through examples gathered from personal experience and the
community, we’ll explore ways to prevent the boat from sinking at the first
spilled glass of water.
Sebastien has been a passionate code monkey since his early teens, and has
experienced agile first hand, as a developer and as a scrum master, for
several years. He’s the director of London-based Caffeine IT, a consulting
/ contracting company, and writes open-source software in his spare time.
Venue:
Bracknell Leisure Centre, Bagshot Road, Bracknell, RG12 9SE
