Welcome to the July issue of DoEvents,
as we head closer to the summer and swelter in the glorious weather the UK
is basking in at the moment, we'd like to take this opportunity to draw your
attention to forthcoming events on the VBUG Calendar over the coming
months. We have some great topics being covered this month with Windows 7
and Windows Server 2008 being covered in Newcastle and Bracknell, Microsoft
Surface (very cool!) in London and Agile Development in Nuneaton, and
remember keep an eye on the VBUG website over the summer for news on other
VBUG events. Don't miss out on these great events - register today!!
July sees the closure of the current
term of office for myself as VBUG Chairman and Tim Leung as VBUG Vice
Chairman. I have taken the decision not to stand for re-election as I wish
to devote more time to continuing my work in the North East community, so I
will revert to my role as North East Coordinator in August. Tim Leung however
will be standing for election to the Chairman's role and having worked with
Tim for many years I know he would is a great candidate for the position.
If you would be interested in standing
for election to the role of Chairman or Vice Chairman of VBUG, we would be
delighted to hear from you. Do you have the enthusiasm and commitment to
take on the challenge? Do you have any ideas or plans as to how the group
can be moved forward? If so please send your manifesto to nic@vbug.co.uk. To see what Tim and
I wrote for our manifestos take a look at - http://www.andrewwestgarth.co.uk/VBUG/vbugelections.htm Maybe
these will give you some ideas. All manifestos will be published on the
VBUG website prior to the opening of the elections.
Enjoy the summer and happy coding!!
Andy Westgarth
VBUG Chairman

VBUG London: Microsoft Surface
Overview:
Microsoft Surface
Matthew Bagwell - EMC Conchango's Creative Director - will provide an
overview of Microsoft's Surface.
Mircosoft’s Surface represents a new chapter in the story of interactive
design and development, making multi-touch applications a practical,
tangible reality. The environment itself continues to forge closer working
relationships between user interface designers and developers – an exciting
phenomena that sees the resurgence of the ‘creative studio’, fuelled by
applications like Expression, Blend and applications created in WPF and
Silverlight. Microsoft’s Surface cannot be considered in isolation of a
total experience concept – its only one touch point – but even so, its full
of potential and EMC Conchango is forefronting prototypes in this new
exciting space to inspire clients to give it real consideration.
EMC Conchango is a world-leading consultancy that combines business,
technology and creative brilliance to design and build the digital
experiences people want to interact with. Our interactive studio prides
itself at being at the forefront of innovation in interface technologies to
create experiences that and both practical and beautiful to use. The agency
has a long-standing heritage in the UK, working with many of the world’s
leading brands. It’s continued success resulted in its acquisition by EMC
Corporation in 2008 and now it enjoys the widest global theatre as a
playground for its thinking and work.

When agile goes bad: how to stay calm and move forward
Overview:
With applying agile methodologies comes changes in many aspects of
delivering software. And with any change will come a time when something
fails. How to keep everyone calm? How to provide practical solutions to
prevent people from reverting back to non-agile practices at the first
roadblock? Through examples gathered from personal experience and the
community, we’ll explore ways to prevent the boat from sinking at the first
spilled glass of water.
Sebastien has been a passionate code monkey since his early teens, and has
experienced agile first hand, as a developer and as a scrum master, for
several years. He’s the director of London-based Caffeine IT, a consulting
/ contracting company, and writes open-source software in his spare time.
Doors open at 6:30 for a 7 o'clock start.

GETEC CENTRE, George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, CV10 7DJ
