Welcome to the November edition of DoEvents.

We're fast approaching our annual conference and we still have spaces left if you wish to attend. This will be a full day event held at the Microsoft Headquarters in Reading on the 26th November. During the day, we have some really interesting content and a great line up of speakers. For those who are still learning about the .Net 3 Framework, David Ringsell will be doing an introduction to WPF. We will also have a session on refactoring by Gary Short and a session on concurrency using functional patterns in C# by Oliver Sturm. During the conference, there will also be Windows Mobile Device workshop which will be run by Tony Whitter. Contact the VBUG office if you wish to find out more or to make a booking!

In terms of regional meetings in November, George Adamson will be doing a jQuery presentation in London. Elsewhere, VBUG Vice Chairman Rob Blackmore will be doing a session on code generation using T4 in Nuneaton. More details about these events can be found below.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference or at an event soon!

Dotnetdevnet:  Tuesday 3rd November 2009 - Credit Crunch Code with Gary Short
http://www.dotnetdevnet.com/Meetings/tabid/54/EntryID/38/Default.aspx

Gary travels from the deepest and darkest depths of Scotland to give us a good ticking off for writing poor code (just kidding, Gary).

Technical debt is the cost of putting off good development practices. This debt, must be paid back to avoid the “interest payments” becoming crippling. This presentation will focus on a number of common developer (and project) anti-patterns that can lead to the build up of technical debt in a project and, having identified these behaviours, we’ll look at techniques to firstly quantify and then to mitigate against them.

Entity Framework in .NET 4 with Eric Nelson - Thursday 3rd December 2009
http://www.dotnetdevnet.com/Meetings/tabid/54/EntryID/39/Default.aspx

Microsoft Developer Evangelist Eric Nelson returns to The .NET Developer Network to tell us all that is new in next year's Entity Framework in .NET 4.

This presentation offers an in-depth discussion demonstrating the new capabilities of the Entity Framework that will ship with Visual Studio 2010. The second release of the Entity Framework focuses on addressing two primary customer scenarios: Domain-Centric application development (TDD/DDD) and the traditional Data-Centric Web application "Forms over Data". This is an in-depth feature overview covering: N-Tier, T4 Templates, POCO, FKs, Mapping, Metadata, etc.

SBUG mini-meeting: 3rd Nov 2009 8pm - Hello Global 360
Global 360 are a new partner who have joined the user group and have contributed a few interesting ideas and suggestions for the user group.

The plan is at this short online meeting they will do a small introduction to who they are and what they do. From here we can suggest things that user group members would be interested in knowing more about and one of the Technical Architects from Global 360 will do a deep dive BPM session at a future SBUG event (most likely start Dec).

The meeting should take about 30 mins + time for any questions afterwards.
